Design Technology Project

Bookmark and Share

For my Design Technology project at A2 I aim to design and make a self assembly gravity racer aimed at users aged 16 and over who are new to soapbox racing and lack the techincal expertise to build a racer from scratch. To progress in this project I need contact with client and users. As such I have a few questions:

If you know of any companies who sell any similar products who I could talk to to find out sales information and unit costs and profit margins.

If you have any information as to any specifications that the racer must follow that would be extremely helpful

Any guidance as to how the best way to set up steering and braking systems would be great as well

I will also need somewhere I can test my product once complete and an expert user who would be willing to test and evaluate my product, preferably in South-East England but I could potentially go anywhere within 4 hours of Lndon.

Any help any of you could provide would be much appreciated

re: Design Technology Project

Hello and welcome to the SCA forum.

The best place for you to start would be Formula Gravity, who have built a kit specifically designed for schools and colleges.

Many races use their own specifications and there are often subtle differences. However, if you use the spec' here you won't go far wrong.

To get you started there are notes on steering and brakes here - have a reead of them and let me know if you have any specific questions.

As for testing and evaluation - Formula Gravity would probably be the best bet again for the South East of England.

Hope you find this useful. Please do get in touch if there's anything else we can do.

Thanks for the help, I've

Thanks for the help, I've been trying to contact Formula Gravity but with no response. I'm being pushed quite tight for a deadline and need some client input. Do you know anyone who could provide sales information on any similar products, or any sort of price range my product should fit into along with any feedback on the idea as a whole and what would need to be done to make it feasible.

re: Design Technology Project

I know David Ackroyd, who is the guy who runs Formula Gravity, has been out of the country for a while so has been quite hard to contact. Might be worth trying again. The FG kits are also marketed by Technology Supplies Ltd.

There is Sejkora in the Czech Republic making carties too.

We ran a survey last year asking what sort of price people would be willing to pay for a racer, but I think all that really showed is that most people actually prefer to build their own and are not prepared to pay very much for a ready made racer. Either that or they have a totally unrealistic expectation on how much a racer would cost to build.

Why not post your question on our facebook page - you might get some useful feedback there.
