Silver DART

Hi all.

Here is a photo of our down hill racer, we are based down south in the garden of England (Kent if you didn’t know).

The idea came about to enter the Aldington Soapbox Derby, to compete again a group of our 4th year apprentices.  But as it is ready and just finished a successful test run we are joining in with the fun at Battle this weekend. This will be the first time any of us have done anything like this.

We are a team of maintenance technicians; it was designed by Steve and mainly built by him. Paul assisted with the welding and upholstery, Bobby manufactured the axle brackets. We out sourced the precision machining work to another work colleague Gerald, who did a great job on the steering axle and brake adaptors.

Spec is

Wheel base is 1600mm

Track is 1000mm

20inch, 14mm axle, 48 spoke BMX wheels.

160mm cable operated disc brakes working on the rear axle.

Cheers

PS hope the link for the photo works if not could somebody give me some help.

Hi  Battle update.

Hi

Battle update.

Silver DART had a very successful first outing, by winning the inaugural Battle soapbox race.

It was a great day out, helped by the weather. A good crown turned up to watch, with many question asked and hopefully the spark ignited to have a go at building one themselves.

Thanks to the team of Steve, Gavin, Paul, Dan, Ron and William, supported by the Hartley, Stubb’s and Jones families.

Cheers

Aldington race

Hi

Silver DART had a very successful second outing, by winning the Aldington soapbox Derby just beating the long standing hill champion by tenths of a second.

We where jointed by three other newly built carts from our works.

One built by some of the third year apprentices, another built by the fourth year apprentices and one built by Team Leaders. All three went well, picking up a number of prizes.

Silver DART had some updates carried out after the Battle success. These including lowering the ride height, smaller nose hole and adding wheel covers.

It was a grand day out, the weather was hot, the beer was cold and in the large crowd there were many friends and family watching and cheering us on.

Before the going down the hill first time I, like some of the other drivers was feeling very apprehensive, the adrenaline rush was immense, the cart recorded a hill time of 54 second with a max speed of 49MPH.

A great big thanks go to all the people who made the day happen, I know a lot of effort went into it and that was shown by how well the day ran. I can't wait to do it all again in the future.
