Hi Snailspeed.Seats: All sorts of things get pressed into service as seats. Plastic stackable chairs are quit common, but don't offer and side support. Gokart seats are much better and can be picked up quite easily on ebay. I like the Caliba seats designed for corporate gokarts, as they are a bit bigger. See http://www.calibaperformance.co.uk/Seats/Corporate.htmHarnesses are usually got from ebay too. Get a 5 point racing harness if at all possible. 4 point harnesses are allowed but 5 point is much better. Also - make sure it is properly mounted.Brakes: In my experience a lot of carties with just rear caliper brakes find it very difficult to pass the minimum static brake force test used at a lot of races, especially if they are hand operated. If they are foot operated you can get more force on them so they can usually get by. However, its well worth the effort if you can get brakes on all four wheels. Be careful with your steering geometry and make sure you avoid inducing "brake steering". The current minimum brake requirements in the SCA rules are;For carties up to 50 Kg (without driver): 50KgFFor carties between 50 and 75 Kg: 60KgFFor carties over 75 Kg: 70KgFSome slower races allow less effective brakes, but if you want to go fast then good brakes are going to be essential.

New Soapbox Race in Buckinghamshire

SCA Recent Comments - February 19, 2013 - 10:54

News has just reached us of a new venue that could be a great new event. Penn House in Buckinghamshire is a wonderful country house with a downhill private driveway nearly a mile in length. It is the home of Earl Howe and he is keen to see if it can become a regular charity event. One of the previous Earls used to race his Bugatti up the tree lined drive and had all the corners banked! A preliminary analysis using SCA CartieSim indicates that speeds will be between 30 and 40mph.

There are no other details yet, but the organisers would like to hear from any racer who would be interested in joining them on Monday May 27th 2013. If you would like to take part, please contact adrian@sbcon.co.uk.

site registration and junior racers

Scottish Carties Comments - February 15, 2013 - 15:38

In reply to Entries Open for CSEx2012:

Hi Lee,

Yes I'm afraid you are correct - there will be no soapbox racing at Cairngorm for the foreseeable future. See here for full details.

By all means register on the SCA site and post in the forum - the more the merrier! You don't need to be an active racer to do that. As for the kids - the best thing is to check with the individual race organisers. Some races are specifically aimed at juniors or have junior age classes, while others are unsuitable for younger racers. Which races did you have in mind?

Hi Woody.Thank you for your reply, I live in a village in Leicestershire.I think age is a state of mind, but I can't remembr!! I have taken on more risky activity's in the last 10 years than I have before, I Ski, SnowboardAirboard, Race a motorbike, Freeboard and now back to GS, the biggest buzz everWas the Olympic Bob sledge in France that has to be the top GS.We would like to build a Kart, and a sidecar outfit, I think I am a bit to big to fit onto a BMX, unless I could build a GS bike to suit my size, but then it wouldn't be in the rules? My days of skateboards (downhill) are long gone I still have them, and I can still ride one (I only do it to upset the kids).RegardsColin.PS, just remembered, I don't do old.
